Lesson 4 - Talking About Patterns

Use these interactive activities to encourage your child to have fun on the Web while learning how to talking about patterns.

Goals

Describe patterns using mathematical language.

Identify and extend 2-attribute patterns.

Instructions for Use

Count on Us lets students make patterns in an interactive room.

To use Count on Us, click the "easy game" button. Drag and drop objects on the bookshelf to make patterns on the bed, walls, floor, and hat. Click the "play again" button to for a new number of objects. Have students describe the patterns using mathematical language.

Pattern Train lets students identify and extend patterns.

To use Pattern Train, have students practice completing patterns of shapes, numbers, or colours. To complete the pattern, drag the blocks onto the train. If a block does not belong where it is dropped, it will return to where it was picked up. Look for patterns either in the numbers, the shapes, or the colours.

Click the "New Problem" button to start a new train.
