Lesson 7 – Strategies for Adding

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about strategies for adding. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Goals

Add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number.

Instructions for Use

Base Ten Block Addition lets students practice adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number.

To use Base Ten Block Addition, click the "Next Problem" button to complete an addition problem. Starting with the "1's" column and working your way over to the "1000's" column, look for blocks that can be grouped to form a larger base ten block unit. To group blocks to create a larger unit, click and hold down the mouse while dragging a rectangle to lasso the blocks. When you have selected the correct number of blocks, the blocks will join together to create the larger unit block. Drag the newly grouped unit into the column to the left. The addition solution will appear in the area on the left.

Number Line Arithmetic lets students visualize adding numbers on a number line.

To use Number Line Arithmetic, select the "+" button at the bottom of the screen. Click the "Go" button under the mathematical problem. Animated arcs represent the problem. Click the "New Problem" button and a new problem will be displayed.
