Lesson 5 - Elapsed Time

To encourage your child to have fun on the Web while learning about Elapsed Time, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Goals

Use math language to describe the relationships between minutes and hours.

Estimate and measure the passage of time in minutes and hours.

Instructions for Use

Elapsed Time lets your child practice reading clocks and determining the elapsed time given a starting time and an ending time.

To use Elapsed Time, select either 'See mode' or 'Guess mode'.

In See mode, have your child make the middle clock read the same time as the Ending Time clock. The middle clock starts out reading the same time as the Starting Time clock. As your child increments the time on the middle clock, the total elapsed time will display next to the label ' Elapsed Time' .

In Guess mode, have your child determine and enter the elapsed time between the Starting Time and Ending Time clock in the text boxes. Once the time is entered, the middle clock will advance the amount of time entered. If the centre clock reads the same time as the Ending Time clock, then the time entered is correct and a "Good Job!" message is displayed. If the answer is incorrect the user will be told whether the time entered is too great or too small and may try again.

Interactive Clock can be used to have your child describe the relationship between minutes and hours.

To use Interactive Clock, click the hour and minute buttons on the clock. Have your child read the time (below the 24-hour clock) to describe the relationship between minutes and hours.

Time Difference Calculator gives your child practice in finding out how long events take.

To use Time Difference Calculator, set the start time clock, and then the end time clock. Click the 'Start Time' button. To show the difference in time, click the hour and minute buttons below the start clock. The difference in time is calculated under the set time clock. To clear the times, click the 'Reset' button.
