Lesson 5 – Using a Number Line

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about using a number line. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

 

Goals

Locate whole numbers along a number line.

Use a benchmark to compare numbers.

 

Instructions for Use

 

Number Line lets students locate numbers on a number line.

To use Number Line, click the "min" button to show the minimum value on the scale. Click the arrows to increase or decrease the minimum value. Set the minimum value to 0. Click the "max" button to show the maximum value on the scale. Click the arrows to increase or decrease the maximum value. Set the maximum value to 50.

Practice finding numbers such as 13, 26, 34, and 48 on the number line.

Drag the circle below the number line along the number line to find the number. The number appears in the box part of the slider above the number line.

 

Number Line Arithmetic lets students visualize adding or subtracting numbers on a number line.

To use Number Line Arithmetic, select the "-" button at the bottom of the screen for subtraction questions. Select the "+" button at the bottom of the screen for addition questions. Click the "Go" button under the mathematical problem. Animated arcs represent the problem. Click the "New Problem" button and a new problem will be displayed.
