Lesson 9 - Measuring Area

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about measuring area. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

 

Goals

Estimate, measure, and record area.

Describe areas of irregular shapes.

 

Instructions for Use

Area Grid lets students create shapes and count the number of uniform shapes that will cover a surface.

To use Area Grid, click on a cell in the grid to add a colour. Click the "Grid" button to hide or show the gird. Click on the button with a red and green square to select a colour. Click on red square button to select a shape. Click the "Grid Size" button to select the size of grid. Click the "Reset" button to start again.

Have students make a shape in the grid and find the area of the shape by counting the number of uniform shapes that will cover its' surface.

Area prompts students to estimate, and measure area.

To use Area click on the blue and yellow rectangle below "Area". Click on the light blue rectangle and read the definition of area. Click the "next" button then click "Level 1". Input the answer in the text box and click the "check" button to see if the answer is correct. Remember to count all the squares in the rectangle to find the area. Try another question.
